Virtual Reality is the most innovative medium these days. Storytelling is undergoing an evolutionary process, spatial narration requires old wisdom and new skills, the relationship between narrator and audience has to be redefined. So, what does it take to create valuable and sustainable content for a 360° sphere?

What is it

Europe’s exclusive training and development lab for Virtual Reality and 360° Film. VR Creators’ Lab provides a creative playground for passionate filmmakers and creative professionals from a wide range of backgrounds. You can learn about, improve and experiment with cutting-edge technologies for 360° film and full CG VR.

Learning form

The 5-day training course in Munich consists of intense expert sessions, mentored pressure cooking development, guided rapid prototyping and group writing sessions. The lab also provides hands-on workshops in full CG VR and 360° shooting. It is a safe haven to learn, explore, experiment and work together – in a completely non-competitive, multidisciplinary, creative, sparkling and enjoyable environment.

Learning content

You will improve your technical skills, train your psychological knowledge, enhance your team competence and use rapid prototyping. Creativity, inspiration and expertise will come together in a mix of keynotes, case studies, hands-on workshops, design thinking sessions and content development.

Learning outcomes: VR Creators’ Lab provides an introduction to the cutting-edge technical, aesthetical, methodical and psychological state of spatial narration, ranging from programming and shooting to postproduction, including the use of design thinking and rapid prototyping methods.


Brett Leonard


As a leading visionary director and producer in the entertainment industry, Brett Leonard has set milestones in the history of VR. Paving the way of digital filmmaking directing his groundbreaking cult classic, “The Lawnmower Man” (1992) is considered one of the true progenitors of Virtual Reality production. He continues pioneering cutting-edge media formats of Virtual Reality following ethical frameworks to nourish human connectedness.

Sara Lisa Vogl


With a background in communication design (focus interactive media), Sara is in love with the idea of new worlds and explores the potentials of VR and AR. Especially fascinated by UX & art in VR, she is working on her VR game ‚Lucid Trips‘, teaches VR at Design Factory International Hamburg and guides long-time VR Trips. A passionate advocate of sharing & caring, Sara is an active member of the international and local VR community. She is currently setting up VR Base Berlin.

Kynan Eng

University of Zurich / ETH Zurich / Switzerland

As researcher and entrepreneur (co-founded 5 VR startups), Kynan has made contributions to both scientific knowledge and practice in VR for over 15 years. In his work at the University and ETH Zurich, he has investigated collective interaction effects in mixed reality, as well as the physiological and neural effects of manipulations within VR environments. The results of his work led to one of the first systems for VR-based neurorehabilitation.

Nicolas Jolliet

DEEP Inc. / Canada

Nicolas has spent over 20 years traveling and hunting for pictures, sounds and stories. In the past 5 years he has specialized in aerial videography, flying his cameras in the world’s most demanding environments including Africa, the Amazon, India and Borneo. At DEEP, Nico is working as Head of R&D and as a 360° cinematographer. He is developing VR video and audio capture systems and workflows.

Thomas Wallner

DEEP Inc. / Canada

Thomas, Founder & CEO of DEEP, is a producer, writer and director working in film and interactive media who received numerous honors incl. 2 Emmy Awards. Currently Thomas and his team are focusing on developing the language for cinematic storytelling in VR. DEEP is developing LIQUID CINEMA, a software platform and toolset that allows to create and distribute story based 360 and VR content across the web, mobile and VR devices.

Robert Hoffmeister

Milkroom Studios / Germany

Robert joined Industrial Light & Magic in 2002 where he worked as lead artist and sequence sup. on many films incl. «Pirates of the Caribbean», «Harry Potter» and «Star Wars». In 2011, he joined Disney as VFX sup. and stereoscopic director and in 2012 Trixter Film. 2014 Robert founded Milkroom Studios, a digital entertainment company which creates leading solutions, from mobile and location based games over AR to VR theme park rides for international clients.

James Kaelan

Wevr / USA

James Kaelan is a filmmaker, VR simmaker, and producer whose films and simulations have screened at festivals around the world—including Sundance, Slamdance, SFIFF, Tribeca, and AFI FEST. He currently serves as the Director of Development & Acquisitions at Wevr, and is a co-founder of the crowdfunding and distribution platform, Seed&Spark. He is the former editor of both BRIGHT IDEAS and MovieMaker Magazine.

Fabrizio Palmas

straightlabs / Germany

With a background in business administration, Fabrizio Palmas is a creative and technical director at straightlabs. Fabrizio leads a team of software developers, art and game designers. Together with his team he develops innovative trainings for enterprises based on virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. Moreover, the Unity Certified Developer teaches at the University of Applied Management

Astrid Kahmke

Bayerisches Filmzentrum / Deutschland

Als international anerkannte Filmproduzentin ist Astrid Kahmke Creative Director des Bayerischen Filmzentrums. Sie hat das renommierte First Movie Program geleitet und innovative Formate wie den «Immersive Storytelling Hackathon» oder das «Writers’ Room:Lab» entwickelt. Seit 2016 kuratiert sie die internationalen «i4c events» in München. Als leidenschaftliche Geschichtenerzählerin und fasziniert von zukunftsweisenden Technologien leitet sie das «VR Creators’ Lab».

For whom

Storytelling is your passion. You are a professional in your field with first experiences in Virtual Reality and/or 360° film. The VR Creators’ Lab addresses to writers, VR developers, game designers, 360° filmmakers, creative producers and VR enthusiasts with the urge to create great content.

Selection: Participation in the lab is subject to selection on the basis of the creative background, production potential, experience in VR and/or 360°. In principle, all applicants should have a professional background as a filmmaker or game designer or storyteller or VR developer or creative producer with working experience in their field.

All candidates will be informed of the final selection until June 2nd, 2017.

  • 5-day-lab with international experts and specialized mentors
