i4c - Spring into 360°

International Conference / 6th of April / University of Television and Film Munich

Immersion, Empathy and Social Impact:
360° experiences offer new opportunities for fictional and documentary narration. Yet how to develop high-quality content and reach our target group? Let’s ask the professionals!

Munich, 08th of March 2017: The future of storytelling has been started a long time ago and in a couple of years 360° environments will be established, just as classic media is today. The way there leads from feature film to spatial narrative, from documentaries to 360° experience, and from reportage to immersive journalism.

i4c - Spring into 360° will have its focus once again on storytelling and will discuss the possibilities and chances for filmmakers, journalists and creatives. The new medium of 360° experiences is not only demanding the ancient wisdom of storytellers but also additional technical and psychological expertise.

On the 6th of April at the University of Television and Film Munich, makers and producers will talk about their experiences and visions, current content related developments, present innovations in the area of camera and volumetric video and discuss the challenges.

Our speakers (selection):

Eren Aksu (The Emblematic Group, USA): Since more than ten years, „the Godmother of Virtual Reality“ Nonny de la Peña, creates experiences which shaped the term of Immersive Journalism. Nonny is a pioneer and visionary in the technical as well as content-related approach and her works are awarded regularly at all important film and interactive festivals. Eren Aksu will present the latest experiences. He will give us an overview and outlook how they suppose the future of Mixed Reality could look like.

Print media knows how effective and influential facts and journalistic content can be. Süddeutsche Zeitung already realized several 360° films, which were provided to a broader audience through the software solution by the Munich company Re’flekt. Stefan Göppel and Lukas Ondreka will report in their case study how to develop user oriented content and publish it efficiently.

Volumetric Video is one of the spectacular developments of the Fraunhofer Institute HHI in Berlin. This innovative technology merges 360° film and Full CG VR in a way that new interactive opportunities emerge for the users. Ingo Feldmann is Head of Immersive Media and Communications in the department Vision and Imaging Technologies at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. He will present the status quo of their researches as well as first potential applications.

ARRI and Fraunhofer HHI conduct a cooperation for evaluating a 360-degrees camera systems consisting of an adapted OmniCam system and 6 Alexa Mini cameras. The system is designed to generate high quality panoramas in everyday production environments. Johannes Steurer will illustrate the technical concept of the system as well as initial results of two pilot productions, which were conducted earlier this year.

The Dutch company Submarine Channel is one of the first and very few players on the market, who produce, distribute and invest in external VR experiences. Corine Meijers from Amsterdam will talk about her previous experiences, business models, funding possibilities and will give an forecast to the future.

Although 4 Blocks was produced for TNT and will only be launched in May, we can show a 360° add-on experience. No matter if scenic light, cinematographical staging,  the performance of actors, user perspective or spatial narration, the production was very demanding in every aspect. Philip Grabow (Grabow & Bartetzko Filmproduktion) will describe the specific aspects during the production, the work at the set and will share his experiences.

Dorothee Pitz will present Inside Ausschwitz (WDR) - the world’s first virtual documentary realized in Ausschwitz-Birkenau. The experience reflects the fates of three surviving women, who are amongst the last witnesses of the Holocaust. With 360° technology the experience merges the personal memories of the women with the overwhelmingly colossal dimensions of the extermination camp which creates an impressive experience.
